Under the Composition section, my group and I have a few proposed additions of content. -Provide the proportions of each of the three major lipids in the plasma membrane. (The Cell: A Molecular Approach. 2nd Ed. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK9898/) -Add examples of integral proteins with functions (Molecular Biology of the Cell. 4th Ed. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK26878/) -Mention in composition intro that composition is not set, but constantly changing for fluidity and changes in the environment, even fluctuating during different stages of cell development. (Assessment of Membrane Fluidity Fluctuations during Cellular Development Reveals Time and Cell Type Specificity. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4928918/) -Adding explanation of what a carbohydrate is and what it offers to the cell membrane function, as well as adding a link to homing receptor. (Cell-surface carbohydrates in cell recognition and response. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3011937) [User:Cottrill41|Cottrill41]] (talk) 19:08, 4 October 2017 (UTC)Cameron Cottrill, Deena Dahshan, Kaitlin Stiltner, Haylie Bryant
Under the history section, my group and I believe that there should be some additional content. Even though there is an article about the history of the cell membrane linked to the history section, we believe there should be some additional information added to this page such as a timeline and brief description of various models of the cell membrane and important figures that played a vital role in the determination of the structure of the cell membrane. We would focus on the origin of the cell theory and the evolution of the current fluid mosaic model of the plasma membrane which is widely accepted today. These additions would not only be important for historical relevance, but would be an adequate starting point for describing the significance of plasma membranes in various organisms. Justin Merritt 206.212.41.153 (talk) 17:51, 10 October 2017 (UTC) (Group: Justin Merritt, Delaney Ellis, Mary Schmeck, Saul Garcia) Under the Prokaryotes section, our group plans to provide further information on the structures and functions of prokaryotic cell membranes (for example, lipid rafts and integral outer membrane proteins), and to describe how these differ from those of eukaryotes. We plan to discuss other types of prokaryotes in addition to bacteria, to include gram-positive bacteria as well as gram-negative. We also plan to add links to terms in the section which have not been defined, such as "bleb", and we proposed moving the Prokaryote section to the bottom of the page in order to present all the other relevant information about membranes before discussing them in the context of organisms. Use of 'inner membrane' to mean inner lipid layer
[edit]In the subsection headed 'Lipid bilayer' it says 'Flippases and scramblases concentrate phosphatidyl serine, which carries a negative charge, on the inner membrane.' Shouldn't this be 'on the inner lipid layer' to distinguish lipid layers from the complete membrane? Strayan (talk) 01:31, 18 October 2019 (UTC)
Organelle membranes
[edit]I think students would like to know the membranes or organelles may differ structurally from the cell membrane. Specifically the tonoplast. I was surprised that it is not even mentioned in the article. Numerous high school biology teachers seem to use this term; perhaps it's outdated and not used at higher academic and research levels? Badly written article
[edit]This whole article is badly written and desperately needs to be made more readable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.157.234.81 (talk) 21:23, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
Mention of oolemma seems wrong
[edit]I'm not an expert on this topic and just heard about oolemmas for the very first time, but if I'm not mistaken the mention of the oolema in the "variations" section in the article doesn't make much sense (which is 1/3 of the topics in the variations section). The introductory sentence makes it seem like this is about variations of a cell membrane. However the oolemma is probably a structure ON TOP of a cell membrane, right? It is more like a ECM or cell wall type of structure, and not a variation of of a cell membrane. ScienceEel (talk) 22:33, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
